Once Upon a Time

Carley loves all things "Princess". She has totally bought into all the Disney propaganda hook, line, and sinker. So for me it is nice because there are lots of cheap little awards and prizes she can earn for doing stuff. We usually watch at least one Princess movie a week. So anytime Carley hears about a princess so she can learn the story of that princess. It all started with Cinderella which was an easy story to understand and then we moved onto Belle and Ariel. Aurora was a little harder to explain, but she bought the love story, so it wasn't bad. Same for Aladdin. Yeah, there is a Genie and an evil guy who turns into a snake, but overall it is pretty self explanatory. Then she wanted to see Snow White. The queen/witch and the dwarfs were a little interesting the first couple of times. Mulan is where it got tough. How do you explain cross dressing princesses? Also there are all the ancestors flying around and that is weird. Not to mention a commentary on women's evolving role in society. Today I recorded Pocahontas. Carley and I have been watching it and it is nuts to explain. I don't want to even point out that they are different ethnicities and skin colors. She is not sure why they are mad at each other and I can't give her a reason. There is also a grandmother that is a tree, which is something our Nana is not. And Carley learned a new word with lots of questions. Who are "savages"? Why are they "savages"? Where are "savages" now? Plus Pocahontas sings about how much she loves nature, which is cool, but hard to understand how the "rock has a spirit". (Nothing against John Denver, best singer/songwriter of all time who also felt like rocks had a spirit, but that is a different story) Also there are lots of guns in this movie. And after all that, I forgot he leaves without her. Sheesh. What princess movie ends up where the girl and the guy don't end up together? Why are Disney movies so tough to explain? There needs to be a Disney rating for parents.

Any of you dealt with this?

My child won't sit through an entire movie let alone ask any questions about it. Will you write all this stuff down so when my kids is like 7 we can talk about it again. Your girl is going to keep you on your toes! Love you and yours!

I have collected all the movies but have a WHILE before they require explanation. So funny. . .

Explaining that Nemo's mom dies in the first five minutes of the movie was soooooooo much fun around here. Sheesh, Disney, let the parents live every once in awhile.

Loved the part where you said "our nana is not a tree" Ha!

That makes me laugh! We watched Pocahontas today and I thought some of the same things. I think it was a little over Annie's head...she loved the singing parts, but got distracted at the rest. Annie still talks about Carley wearing her Snow White shoes to McD's...Carley is her idol!

Kennedy LOVES all things princess, however she is scared of all the villians in the Princess movies. So we are safe so far - Cinderella is the only one she will watch. She was just bored with Pocahantas, I don't blame her so was I ;)

Love your commentary!

Carley is too much! She is so funny!! I love all of her questions...she is just too smart :)

Only your child is smart enough to ask real questions at this age. Just let her watch Grey's or something.

HA! I love her little mind! When you learn the trick to all this, let me know!! We too have lots of questions around here, so I have been staying away from most princess movies for that reason. She does better with the 30 minutes tv programs anyways. However, R just fell in love with the Lion King..... when Mufasa was killed, Reagan kept telling me "Simba's daddy won't wake up... he is REALLY tired." Worked for me!

Here is my issues with Disney movies - why do all the moms have to die? What was Walt's issue with having a strong healthy mom?

fox & the hound, bambi, snow white, cinderella, etc

how do I explain that to Ash?
... ooh just read Phillips family - glad to see there is agreement!

Carley is so smart. Caroline asks difficult questions too, but not about the Princesses. She won't watch any of the movies because they contain conflict. Caroline is about to be five!! Carley is far more advanced on her Princess knowledge.
